On the Tracks and Think Pink

Last spring my friend Jenn and I went to On the Tracks. Held in Downtown Opelika, this event features a wine trail with different samples of wine and appetizers at local shops, restuarants, etc. We had a blast in the spring and I found out this week that another one was being held last night.

Jenn and I arrived just after 7 pm, but quickly realized that we wouldn't be there for long when we almost ran into someone from the past. So, we visited a couple of shops instead. Sadly, I didn't find anything I just needed to buy at Taylor Made Designs (super cute jewelry store). I did find a great jacket at Fringe though. We also noticed that in 2010 an Irish Pub will open Downtown. Fun!

After the quick shopping trip, we decided to head to head to Laredo's for dinner and a margarita. Good food, good strawberry margarita for me (regular/rocks for Jenn), and good conversation. Not exactly the evening that we had planned, but sometimes it is more fun to let the night unfold into something unexpected.

This morning Collins picked me up and we headed to Downtown Opelika for the Think Pink Walk benefiting the fight against breast cancer. Just last week I had thought about finding a walk to take part in, however wasn't aware of one taking place. I always seem to miss them and find out about them after they happen. My mom is a survivor and I really wanted to do some active to show support. Thankfully I found out about this one just in the nick of time to pre-register.

We arrived early for registration, paid (we registered over the phone), and changed into our Think Pink shirts. Then we had some breakfast (Panera...yum) and did some people watching. The funny thing is that in the sea of people out there for the walk Collins and I wind up getting interviewed for a story in the Plainsman. What are the odds?

Before the walk started, the organizers said a few words and there was some entertainment. The main performers were the Yahooters...yup, that is how you spell it. They have one person who sings and several other ladies (of all ages) dance. It was funny and entertaining. Collins and I danced a little and I of course took some pics. Shortly thereafter the walk started. Downtown Opelika really is a cute little area. Collins was on the lookout for a loft space...one can hope.

We did a little shopping and then headed home. It was a great start to the day. Sadly, the Auburn Tigers did not have a great game day. Although the outcome of the game was not what I was hoping for...I still believe in the team. I think that this game will only make them stronger. Looking forward to the game against Kentucky next week (my parents alma mater) and the UPC family and friends tailgate. Come out and join us for good food and fun!

NACA

This past weekend I traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina with eight students and my two graduate assistants for the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) South Regional Conference. I love conferences...all kinds. Love meeting new people, networking, attending educational sessions, etc. Sadly though we did not get to explore Winston-Salem. We did have the chance to eat at two local restuarants. Highly suggest NOMA. It was delicious!!! If you are in Winston-Salem, it would be a crime not to go. Had Kernel Kustard for dessert...popcorn and ice cream...yum! We also went to Foothills. The food was good, but the service was way to slow. Not sure if I would recommend.

Ok, onto the NACA recap. The conference is typically held the first weekend in October. This comes at the end of the first month and a half of classes, tons of events, and four home games in a row. Needless to say, a good excuse to get away, but already tired before we even arrive.

Auburn presented three educational sessions at the conference. Melissa presented to staff on student development theories. Collins and one of our students presented on Basic Programming Skills. I presented with one of our student on Co-sponsorships. All presentations went well. I had planned on finishing the co-sponsorship presentation much earlier than I did. The student that I presented with met several times, but everytime I went to work on putting the information together I was needed by someone else. So, my own needs and that of the presentation got put on the backburner. Thankfully, I finished the powerpoint and we were able to work well together to deliver a great presentation. Whohoo!

This year for NACA Auburn applied for the Board of Excellence Award. We haven't applied for any awards in the past. The selection process was broken down into two parts. The first was written materials. There was a series of questions that we had to answer about UPC. We also had to provide letters of support from staff and students. We had to include budget information, but also added some of our forms (event evaluation and co-sponsorship), as well as promotional materials and publicity. In total, the final document was probably around 45-50 pages. We had it bound and if I do say so myself, it was AUsome!

Well, we were selected as one of two finalists in the $325,000 and over programming budget category. By the time we found out our students had one week to prepare. Well all we knew is that they would need to prepare a 30 minute oral presentation...but covering what. Our VP led the presentation team that included three other delegates from UPC. We guessed that it would be an elaboration of the written materials and through email clarified that. Once the information was compiled...the students had approximately two days to finalize preparations. The team rode in my car up and we went through the presentation a bit. Then Thursday night they "presented" for the rest of us and we gave them feedback. The next day they did one last run through before the presentation before the six judges.

The presentation could not have gone better. The students did a fantastic job! I was so proud of them. There were a few funny parts when they may have said something that they didn't practice, but that made it all the better. While we knew they had done well, we had no idea how the competition had done. The next day at the closing banquet, the awards were presented. And.....drumroll please.....Auburn UPC won the Board of Excellence Award! So AUsome:) I was proud of their presentation and their efforts, but so very thankful that all of their hard work and the great things that our students provide for Auburn were recognized. This award is for our current council, but also for all of the students that have participated in the past working long hours, working up a sweat, and brainstorming lots of ideas. Thank you UPC for serving Auburn!

Keep the Faith

Keep the Faith...last week I did just that several times.

First test was Tiger Nights. This event is a late night program and this semester we expanded. It has been a UPC goal for several years and this year it happened. It was not without challenges though. The fall concert actually took place at Tiger Nights. This was a combining or pooling of resources between two committees. We had several things that had to be worked out in order for both to happen, and the event certainly tested our event planning skills and sanity at times. I will say, I work with some incredible students and fantastic team of graduate assistants and support staff. This event would not have been successful without this team. Thank you, thank you, thank you all for your hard work and dedication!

AU vs. West Virginia...Wow what a game! First a monsoon hit the stadium and sent many seeking cover from the storm on the concourse of the stadium. I went to the game with my friend Jenn. We decided to seek cover. I think that I would have rather stayed in the rain. The concourse was way overcrowded. Seriously we were packed like sardines. People started pushing at times, etc. I am not closterphobic...but I got a little panicky at times. Too many bodies too close together. No fun at all...not good times.

Finally the weather subsided and we were able to head back to our seats. The game got off to a rocky start, but the fans and the team kept the faith and fought back. The student section was crazxy the entire time...so full of spirit. At half time, we were only one point behind. The second half was just as exciting. Despite being wet, and really not caring...the game was super fun. It is up there in favorite games for me along with beating Florida a few years ago.

I feel like there is so much more to write about this game. It was fantastic, exhilarating, and exhausting all at the same time. So glad that we won and were able repay West Virginia the favor of last years game. Jenn and I headed to Toomer's after the game. It was my first time there this season. Didn't get to throw any toilet paper, but did get some picks. Hopefully this season will see many more rollings of Toomers.

He's Just Not That Into You

People want to love and be loved. Whether it be family, friendship, or a romantic relationship the comfort and security of being in a loving relationship makes us feel good and happy. For a loving romantic relationship, we don't know when it will happen. For some, it happens early on in life...for others it may take longer than they thought. Some date often, others not so much. I wish everyone the best of luck in current or future relationships.

On that note, this week we had a two part event series. On Monday we showed the film He's Just Not That Into You. On Tuesday evening we held "So You Think You Want To Be In Love" featuring Greg Behrendt co-author of "He's Just Not That Into You" and his wife Amiira. Greg and Amiira co-authored "It's Called a Breakup because it's Broken." The students had a great set up on the stage for the speakers.

The format of the program was great. Greg started off with some stand up. He is a former comedian. Greg thanked all of the men for attending...of which there were probably no more than 10. Very much a female dominated audience. Who would have guessed?

Then he spoke about his time writing for Sex and the City and how the concept of He's Just Not That Into You evolved from advice to episode on the show to book. He credits Oprah for making the book into a success. She booked the authors for a show after two weeks in print. After Oprah, the book sales went crazy. And then they made it into a movie.

Next Greg and Amiira discussed relationships and did a Q&A with the audience. Lots of people had questions and they were very open asking them in front of everyone. They didn't hold back on giving the advice and confronting the brutal facts so to speak in the relationship or non-relationship scenarios discussed. Made me think.

At the end, Greg and Amiira, posed for pictures and answered more questions. Overall I thought that the two events were successful. The speakers, while a bit racy at times, was one of my favorite events that UPC has sponsored. Great format, engaged audience, and fun speakers. Would highly suggest it to any university to bring to their campus. Many thanks to all who participated.

War Eagle

Football season has started and the Tigers are doing a great job! The first game was held over labor day weekend at 6 pm on Saturday. We played LA Tech and won. Good game overall.

My friend and co-worker Tim came with me to the game. He wasn't sure if he was going to be able to make it because he hadn't been feeling well, but he rested all day and was able to attend. My seats are on the first row again, however in the endzone with a better view of the field and jumbotron. We had a good time at the game and made it onto the jumbotron several times. We were actually getting food when the best play of the game was made. Sad we missed it. We did see some action though because we got funnel cake and something dropped and grease splashed onto the person working this concession stand. No worries though, I found an EMT to help.

Switch to game #2. Auburn vs. Mississippi State in SEC play. Tailgate was fun. Mama Sparrow didn't want to drink alone, so Tim and I joined her in an adult beverage. I didn't really make anything for tailgate. I bought a pound of chicken salad (Fruity Fran) from Chicken Salad Chick (yummy) and then some mini croissants from Kroger. Not homemade, but tasty nonetheless.

My friend Jenn came with me to the game and we had a blast cheering on the tigers. We made it onto the jumbotron 2 times and Aubie came to visit us 4 times. Not to mention the tigers scored 49 points for the win. Excellent game! Thankfully it did not rain. Looking forward to West Virginia next weekend. War Eagle!

Yard Sale

I recently had a yard sale with my good friend Melissa and her husband Matt. I cleaned out my closets this summer and had a ton of stuff to sell...a lot more than I anticipated. Where did it all come from? At any rate, Melissa and I decided on the Saturday between the first weekend after school started and labor day weekend for the sale. It worked perfectly.

Getting ready for the yard sale takes some work. I can understand why some people don't even bother. My family used to have yard sales growing up. We would always have so much to sell, which makes since I suppose with four kids. For our yard sale, we held it at the Melissa's since I don't have a yard. Thought it would be hard to sell items without one. Melissa put ad add in the local paper, we made signs to put up directing traffic and we had different colored price stickers for our items (yellow for me, green for Melissa).

Pricing all of the stuff took so much time and was really my least favorite thing of the entire yard sale. Well transporting it all to Melissa's was a close second. So many items to price and move. Took me more than two days to price and several trips to drop it all off. Matt even had to come and pick up some of the pieces because they wouldn't fit in my car.

People had warned us about the hagglers and early risers. We saw both. The yard sale was scheduled from 7:30-11:30. When Matt opened the garage at 6:15 to move the cars, someone jumped out of their car to look over what we had. Apparently some other people had already been by and left. The guy was interested in my table but was only willing to pay $20. I passed. We had a good crowd and sold lots of stuff and then looked at the time. It wasn't even 8 am yet.

We had lots of hagglers come through. We had priced our items with some room to negotiate. Some really tried to get things for nothing, others paid what the price tag was. When we had a slow moment I went inside to use the bathroom and get something to drink. I came back outside to lots of people. Matt told me to go to the bathroom more often.

I think Matt enjoyed the yard sale at times more than Melissa and I. He got so excited when his items would sell...it was cute and funny. His items were actually the big ticket items. Way to go Matt! He even considered going back in the house and looking for other things to sell.

Sadly, my table did not sell even though it had some interested people at times. Melissa's prom dress also did not sell...shocking I know. The sale was profitable though. I made over $140 and Melissa and Matt made over $200. They are putting the money towards a stroller. I think I am going to buy a new comforter set. Goes to show....one man's junk is anothers treasure. People don't buy things that you think would sell, and they buy the most random things that you put out for sale.

Welcome Week

Sorry it has been so long since my last post. Needless to say, I have been going nonstop since school started. Let's start with Welcome Week. It is hard to believe that it has been almost a month since Welcome Week first began. We had a few weather difficulties to overcome, but overall the week was a success.

The kick off event was great! We had approximately 1200 people attend (students and families) and great entertainment. The student leaders really pulled together to make this event a success. It was the first time that this event was held and we plan on making it a part of Welcome Week in the future. Word to the wise, don't put on new shoes no matter how comfortable they appear to be for an event. I didn't have blisters...tore the skin right off and I couldn't wear real shoes for over a week. No fun.

The rest of the week went well also. Events included class tours, Outdoor Movie (indoor because of rain), Tiger Town transit run, grocery madness, AU Idol, Meet and Greet the VP, Popsicles with the President, Trivia Night, Block Party (also moved indoors), and Pictures with Aubie. There were so many more events that were apart of Welcome Week. Many thanks go out to everyone who helped make it a reality.

The team leaders were fun to work with...crazy at times, but good hearts and they worked hard. I look forward to debriefing with them and finding out about their experiences with Welcome Week. In addition, we are planning a Volunteer Appreciation Night soon where I get to share all of the pictures that I took before and during Welcome Week. See, I do share pics...

Disneyland anticipation

It is almost 2 am and I am wide awake. Welcome Week starts in t-minus two days and classes start in 4 days. I have that feeling of anticipation that reminds me of when I was small and had trouble sleeping the night before we would go to Disneyland. I would be so excited thinking about all of the rides and fun that we would have and that would keep me awake.

The anticipation of Welcome Week is keeping me up. We still have a bit of loose ends to tie up in the next two days, but the Welcome Week Leadership Team has done such a great job. The PR for Welcome Week has been great and the students have done a really good job of using the theme...Lights, Camera, Auburn in all materials. Very proud of their efforts and how much they have grown through the experience.

Well, better try and get some sleep. The next week is going to be super busy with great events! Get excited for everyone to return to campus and all of the good times to be had by all. Check out our schedule at www.auburn.edu/welcomeweek.

Emily's Wedding

This past weekend I headed to Atlanta for the wedding of one of my former students. It is so strange to say that because she just graduated and she was apart of UPC for 4 years. Crazy! Anyway, Emily and Zach got married on Friday evening at the Swan House at the Atlanta History Center. Beautiful location, beautiful bride and good times had by all.

I had a great time at the wedding. Wore a dress and shoes that I got in Vegas. Thanks mom:) I was able to spend time with Emily, fun UPC folks (current and alum), and dance up a storm. The band was really good and got the crowd going. The food was yummy as well. I tried a little of each cake and liked the wedding cake the best.

Each table had cameras and we had a good time taking pictures. Speaking of pictures, my camera's batteries were low the entire evening and I did not have replacements. I almost thought that I wasn't going to be able to take pictures, but thankfully the camera did not die until the end of the evening.

I stayed at Melissa's parents house in Atlanta. They have a wonderful 100 year old home not far from their church. I loved hearing the history of the house. It has so much character. Love the guest room and their hospitality. Oh, and her mom's iron totally rocks. Puts my iron to shame.

On Saturday I went shopping at the Lenox Mall. Had a little trouble getting there (missed my exit), but no worries. I had no plans for the day, so no schedule (wasn't able to meet up with sorority sister due to broken foot). Those are the best days. I started in Macy's. I really love Macy's. I can always find something and that day was no exception. I got two pairs of pants and a game day top. Used a coupon and saved some money. Love it.

The rest of the day was spent at lunch at Corner Bakery, exploring the mall, heading to some other local shops and then grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. We have Trader Joe's in California all over the place. They have a great assortment of items to choose from. I bought Tim some wine since I was there and filled up the cart with other goodies for myself. I put the freezer items in a cooler that I had bought (always thinking ahead) and made my way back to Alabama.

I had the best day and a half in Atlanta. I should get out of town more often, which is funny because I feel as though I have been traveling a ton lately. I missed Star's shower when I was in Atlanta, but did drop off a gift with my friend Melissa to give to her. Hope that they had a wonderful time and I wish them nothing but the best.

Texas

So, not this past weekend, but the weekend before I traveled to Texas for an engagement party for my dear friend Jessica and her fiance' Ryan. I was in California when the invitation to the party arrived. So, basically I didn't get it until two weeks after it was mailed. At first I looked at flights and then I got it in my head that I would drive to Texas. What is a 10 hour trip anyway? I had hoped to find someone to drive with me, but everyone was already going out of town that weekend.

So, my mom and Jessica's mom were not really keen on me driving by myself to Texas. Mostly because a good part of my trip would be at night based on when I would have to leave Auburn. I knew that I was going to the engagement party though because I wanted to be there for Jessica at this special time and she would so be there for me. So, at the last minute I used some Delta award miles and paid $150 for a flight. And when I say last minute I mean the Friday morning of the day that I left. My boss was pretty impressed. Nothing like a somewhat spontaneous flight to Texas. I had packed the night before, so I was ready to go. By the way, my friend Jessica didn't know that I was coming. Her mom did, but Jessica didn't know until I called her on my way to the airport. She was kinda impressed that I bought my ticket that morning as well.

My flight was delayed two hours and some of my fellow travelers did not make the flight all that enjoyable. Smelly man, someone who snored and a perpetual sneezer. No fun. Oh well. When I landed in Dallas I went to pick up my rental car and Jessica and her brother Matt surprised me at the rental counter. So excited to see her! About the same time her friend Holly's family (Holly, Steve, and Fenway) arrived at the rental car terminal as well. And I mean terminal. Two story building just for rental cars. We all got our cars and then headed out for dinner.

After dinner at IHOP (Jessica and Ryan love pancakes:), I followed Matt down to Athens, Texas. We arrive around midnight at the hotel. I was beat so off to bed. The engagment party was being held at Jessica's parents ranch in Athens. Next morning I woke up early ready to help in anyway that I can. After running a few errands, I left some messages at the ranch and with Matt. Matt called me back a bit later and I met mama D and friends at WalMart. I followed them back to the ranch. Then I left the ranch and went to pick up Steve at the hotel. Once back at the ranch I helped Sandy (family friend) with flower arrangements. I didn't really do much but did notice that the oasis that was purchased for the center pieces was not the right kind. I went back to town (about a 15 minute drive) and went to a few different stores to try and find some. Stroke of luck I found some, bought it and a cheap trashcan and water to soak it on the ride home. Dropped it off and then headed back to the hotel to get ready.

The party was so much fun! Jessica and Ryan had family, friends and co-workers come to the ranch to wish them well. The party started outside, but the Texas sky had other ideas. About 2 hours into the party we were sent indoors. It was totally fine though because the dj and food moved inside as well and lots of fun was had. Food was great, people were great, and the cake was great. Such a beautiful cake! Will have to post pictures when I figure out how to do that. Holly's son Fenway was entralled with the cake. It was so fun to watch.

The wedding date was announced as July 17, 2010. Get excited! I took tons of pictures of the party. Apparently 251. Jessica counted when she downloaded the pictures the next day. I was able to spend a few hours at the ranch prior to leaving for the airport. I wasn't able to go on the atv ride, but maybe next time. I am so glad that I was able to go to Texas and celebrate with Jessica and Ryan. I am so happy that they found one another and so excited for their wedding.

Exec Bonding and Car

Last Thursday was UPC Exec bonding. The night started off at Laredo's for dinner. It was a busy night at the restaurant and by the time we got seated, we were starving. Needless to say we were thankful for the chips and salsa. I ordered some guacamole for the group. It was ok, but not great. It was noisy in the restaurant because of all of the people, so Ashley (UPC VP) was able to tell our waiter something without the rest of the group knowing. Well, Collins (UPC GA) overheard, but she played along. So, what was it that Ashley told our waiter....hmmm that it was Seth's b-day. What does that mean? It means that they come over to you, singing loudly, put a sombrero on your head and give you a tastey treat. Melissa (UPC GA) was dying laughing. Seth was a good sport and I have some fun pictures. Apparently, Melissa and Seth had talked about the whole birthday-singing thing earlier. It was probably one of the highlights of the night.

Dinner was good overall for this region. Lots of mexican food to go around. I kind of wish that I had ordered something different, but there is always next time. The funny thing is that I always crave mexican food every so often, but am always somewhat disappointed. It is just not the same as the mexican food in California or even Texas. Oh well...at least it fills some of the cravings.

After dinner, we were all headed to the bowling alley. When I got to my car I noticed that my light was on. We had only been inside for a little over an hour, so I hoped for the best. My car did not start at first. I even called Seth (UPC treasurer) to see if he had jumper cables. He was on his way back when my car started. I called to let him know what my car was back in business and then we met up at the bowling alley.

Thursday night is apparently college night at the bowling alley. At 9 pm, you can get shoes and 4 games. That does sound like a deal, but when you start a 9 pm you can only get so much done with 6 people taking turns. I haven't bowled in probably 3-4 years. Couldn't tell you what my last score was. Low and behold I started off slow and then all of the sudden I was getting spares and doing really well. Not sure where it came from, but everything was falling into place. I won the round with a 134. Who knew?

The next round did not go as well. My shoulder started to hurt a bit, so my bowling score yielded a 77. We only finished two rounds because it was getting late. Oh, well it was fun nonetheless. At 9 pm the lights went down and the music turned up. Nothing like good company, good music, a little dancing, and a lot of bowling. Did some interesting people watching...the guys next to us were having a lot of fun. One of them had some stuffed animals in his pocket that he periodically took out. Strange, no?

When we left the bowling alley my car did start and I got home fine. The next morning I had a haircut appointment. I got in my car, turned the key and nothing. I flagged down the first passing car to ask if they had jumper cables, she didn't but said that her husband might. He was out walking the dogs, so she asked him and he came to help. His name was Jason and after several minutes of trying he was able to get my car to start. Thankfully. I went to the salon and the car had been running for about 17 minutes. Well, the car won't lock when it is running so I had to turn it off. Decided I couldn't worry about it then and went in for my haircut. Got a cut and style and then came back out to a...that's right, a dead battery. I had a meeting at 11 am that I had to finish the agenda for, so I called Collins to see if she was already in the office. Thankfully she was able to pick me up on her way in, just a little detour.

Later my friend Tamara took me back to the car and I called AAA on the way. We got something to drink from McDonald's and then waited for the towtruck to arrive. He came not too much longer later and was able to get the car to start, but said that my battery wasn't holding a charge. Tamara falled me to the Nissan dealership where I left the car overnight. I knew that I needed work on my brakes also, so I guess it all worked out. Went to dinner with Tamara and her son Tyler and Tamara was sweet enough to take me to the grocery store for some staples. At Kroger we had a mini UPC reunion with several UPC alumni (Joey, Brad, Big Hig (current), Emily, Nick).

Next day picked up my car which they wanted to keep all weekend because one of the parts for some boot for my axle wasn't in. It is ok to drive, but I need to take it back in tomorrow morning. A little over $600 later, my car will be back in shape. Blue is 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles on her. She has treated me well and I will keep her as long as I can. Thanks again to Tamara for all of her assistance with the car situation. Blue and I are grateful.

Visiting with Anna and the Kids

On Tuesday I went to visit with Anna, Jackson and Lilly. Anna is Abby's (Miss AU 2008) older sister. Jackson and Lilly are her two kids. Baby number three is on the way. Her husband just finished his residency and is now working at Columbus Regional. She and her family have a beautiful new house that they are currently in the process of decorating.

While visiting, Anna and I got to catch up and I had fun playing with the kids. In the past, Lilly has been a little shy around me...probably because she was really young. She is so grown up now and I had fun playing with her. Lilly and I enjoyed a game of passing a few balls back and forth on the ground. The other game that she really liked was Tinkerbell. In this game I picked her up so she could fly around. I named it Tinkerbell because she had a picture of Tinkerbell on her jammies. Too cute!

Jackson was having fun with Wii, so I asked if I could play. We golfed....I was not very good and bowled. We had fun with the game. Jackson is so smart and super cute. He starts first grade in the fall.

We had a visit from Abby's mom as well. She is new to Facebook and had just had dinner with friends she hadn't seen in years. A reunion of sorts. Oh the fun of Facebook. I have reconnected with many people from my past as well.

I had a good visit and we are planning another get-together soon.

Closet Overhaul

I have been talking with some friends lately about having a yard sale. I don't actually have a yard, so will rely on the kindness of friends to host this event. At any rate, it gave me the perfect inspiration or push to clean out my closet. I spent many hours on Saturday and Sunday cleaning, editing and organizing my closet.

Of course, it got worse before it got better. Much worse actually. It looked like my closet exploded in my bedroom. So, I then moved items into the living room for organization. I put the clothes and shoes not going back into my closet into two piles. The first of which I am going to take to Fringe, a local consignment shop, and try to sell them there. The second of which is going straight to the yard sale. The clothing and shoes not bought by Fringe will go to the yard sale. Anything not sold at the yard sale will go to Goodwill, because it certainly doesn't need to come back into my apartment.

I believe the yard sale is going to be on August 29. If you are in the Auburn area, you should come by and shop or just visit.

Visit to California

I had a great trip to California recently. I was able to spend two weeks at home, with a little side trip to Vegas. Both of my sisters were in town as well. Allison, who lives in Virginia, had a conference in Long Beach and was able to stay for a week afterwards. Marci, who lives in San Francisco, came down for the 4th of July weekend.

Update on grandma. For falling and breaking her leg and having surgery in January she looks really good. She has a walker and uses it most of the time. She is really thin though...just 112 pounds. We keep trying to get her to eat more, but after eating a big breakfast, she really isn't that hungry the rest of the day. She will eat here and there, but not always the best things for her. Somehow, she thinks that having a twinkie and some of the "goodies" from her stash by her chair will help to put a little meat on her bones. She still keeps trying to get into things that she should probably just leave alone. Apparently she was in the garage while my mom and I were in Vegas looking for her step stool. The same one she fell from in January. Needless to say, she won't be finding that anytime soon. Aside from that, she still has more energy than most people, just can't seem to sit still or leave things alone...has to keep moving things around. I found my granola with the laundry supplies. Yummy. She has a caregiver that stays with her, even though she says she doesn't need a watchdog. Gotta love that grandma still has some pep in her step as she approaches her 96th birthday in August.

So, what did I do on my trip? Well, aside from hanging out at grandma's house the fam and I went shopping. We hit up the outlets, a couple of malls and some random stores. Anything to help out the economy a little bit. Really though, I love a great deal and rarely buy something if it isn't on sale. Allison, my mom and I also went to a Dodger game. We were dressed in dodger blue, got dodger dogs (yum), and sat in the hot direct sunlight. Did I mention we sat in the left field pavilion and that every camp in the LA area was in attendance at the game? Honestly, all of the kids seemed to be on their best behavior, it was some of the adults that needed a manner check. The dodgers won, but honestly the game was a little on the less than exciting scale. They scored one run in the bottom of the 8th inning...nonetheless, I enjoyed the ballpark atmosphere.

What else did we do? Well, Allison and I went on some long walks every day that she was in town. Marci joined here and there when she was in town (she is now training for a marathon). Usually we walked in neighborhoods, but one day Allison and I walked to the town of Sierra Madre a couple of miles from grandmas. Once we arrived we had breakfast and looked at some shops. We even looked at this cute old church that I had always wondered what the inside looked like. In addition to the walks and much needed exercise, we spent time by and in the pool. I enjoyed the opportunity to relax by the pool and get my bronzed goddess on as my friend Jenn calls it. Oh, Allison and I made egg salad sandwiches for everyone as well. I hadn't had egg salad in so long, and it was really good. Note to self...make egg salad again soon.

Other than that, we just hung out...cooked, rented videos, layed with Sienna (our dog..who I always miss snuggling with) read books, etc. I did get to see some of my friends and their kids. Melody and I went out for dessert with her newest addition Thomas Koa (Koa). Her older son Daniel stayed with Daddy because he had video games. I also got to go to lunch with my friend Jennifer and her little girl Paige. It was great to see both Melody and Jennifer and their adorable children. It was my first time meeting Koa...too cute. I can't believe how much Paige had grown. She is funny and is very interested in dogs right now. Think that she is hoping for a new addition to the Reigler family in the form of a puppy. Mom and dad might have other plans though. Wish I had been able to see more folks, but hard to do when you are spending most of the time with family and don't have a car. Thanks Jen and Melody for driving in to see me. You are the best!

Now on to our Vegas trip. We took Marci to the Burbank airport on Monday evening and then dropped off Allison at LAX on Tuesday morning. This was the morning of the MJ memorial at the Staples Center. We did wind up driving right by the Staples Center and expected a lot of traffic. We actually did not run into much on that freeway, but did see a lot of officers at the exits...nice to see that even though California is having some major money difficulties the city of LA is able to keep things in perspective and prioritize what to spend money on.

At any rate, after we dropped Allison off at the airport...btw she saw Daniel from Ugly Betty... mom and I drove to Vegas. The drive is around 4 hours, but we stopped at the outlets on the way to break up the drive and to find some deals. I didn't really get anything at the first set of shops, but did find a couple of things at the next stop. We arrived in the early evening and got settled into our room.

To put it simply...I love Vegas! What is not to love? Well, there are definitely things not to love, like the folks who stand on the side of the road trying to hand out "questionable material" to passersby...I actually felt really sorry for them. I am sure that they would rather being doing something else for a living. Oh well, I decided not to focus on that and just enjoy my trip.

I have always had a great time in Sin City. Typically, I try and get there once a year...usually in the summer. I love that anything goes...it is a great place to people watch. Mom and I stayed at the Monte Carlo. They have a great summer rate, give you coupons for restaurants/shows and I love the pool area. The pool area has your standard type pool, a wave pool, lazy river, and a kiddie pool. The wave pool is definitely my favorite. I enjoy laying out in the 100+ temps (thankfully a dry heat), cooling off in the water, and reading. I read three + books while I was there. Oh, and mom and I highly suggest getting the mango and chicken quesadilla and french fries from the pool menu. Sooo good!

While in Vegas we visited some of the area hotels and casinos. We shared a yummy crepe for dessert and on a different day used a two for one coupon to buy passes to go up in the eiffel tower. I had never been up before and it was so neat to be up so high and overlook the Vegas strip. I got some good pictures and we were able to see a couple of water shows at the Bellagio from up there as well. Mom and I were supposed to see the Wayne Brady Show on Thursday evening. The show got cancelled. Sad day. We were however able to get tickets for Friday night and the show did go on thankfully. Wayne Brady is super talented. It was mostly an improv type show, using some audience members here and there, and then he sang some songs. Apparently he started out as a singer and has recently put out an album. I new he could sing, just didn't know that was how he started. All in all, a most enjoyable trip.

After Vegas, we headed back to California, visited with grandma some more and then it was time to leave. It is always bittersweet to leave California. I miss my fam and friends. I have a ton of work to do now that I am back....Welcome Week and the start of school is just around the corner. War Eagle!

BTW - can't believe that I typed so much...hope that I didn't bore anyone.
